July 14, 1935 – December 16, 2024
David Lloyd Hill passed peacefully into heaven surrounded by loving family on Dec. 16, 2024, at age 89. Born on 7/14/1935 to Melville and Alice Hill, Dave graduated from West Seattle High School and earned a BA in English from Washington State University in 1957.
He loved the outdoors and spent many years hiking in the Olympics and Cascades. Dave also skied nearly his entire life – and met his wife, Corinne Dignon, at Crystal Mountain. Together, they skied at nearly every resort in the Western U.S. and British Columbia and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Whistler in 2018. In the 1980s, Dave became an active Scout dad and after helping for several years as a parent, he became Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 167. He served in this role for 15 years and enjoyed teaching and mentoring the hundreds of boys that came through the troop during his time as Scoutmaster.
Dave also enjoyed running and cycling. He spent several years on Hood to Coast and Rainier to Pacific relay teams; and rode in numerous Cascade Bicycle Club events, including the Chilly Hilly, STP, and RSVP. Dave’s favorite cycling trips were to Europe where he and Corinne had great adventures biking in Turkey, Croatia, and the Greek Islands.
While he loved to travel abroad, Dave’s favorite spots were at the family cabin on Vashon Island and the Oregon coast. He spent numerous summer days at Vashon over the past 55 years and enjoyed swimming, paddle boarding, and spending time with his family.
Dave remained active his entire life and after retiring at the age of 75 from a long career in real estate finance, he went to work for REI. He spent the next 10 years working at REI’s Flagship store in downtown Seattle and was likely the oldest employee in the company.
Christian faith was very important in Dave’s life. He was an active member of University Presbyterian Church (“UPC”), where he was involved in Youth ministries and held roles as an elder and deacon. Dave also helped lead the efforts to create an affiliate church, the Union Church, and regularly attended both UPC and Union in recent years.
The family thanks Empress Senior Living for their extraordinary compassion, care, and support for Dave over his last nine months. Dave is survived by his beloved wife, Corinne; son, Matt (Sarah); daughter, Melissa (Jim) Cromwell; and five grandchildren, Tatum and Hadley Hill; Chloe, Katie, and Brody Cromwell.
Remembrances can be made to Union (www.unionchurchseattle.org/give), UPC (www.upc.org/give), or Troop 167 at UPC.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, January 30 at 1:00pm at University Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at the Center for Urban Horticulture.
