Floyd Velasquez was born in Flatonia, Texas on October 27, 1926, and passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, 2023. He was predeceased by parents, Santiaga Tovar Velasquez and Jose Velasquez, son Pete Velasquez, brothers Mike Velasquez and Augustine Velasquez; and sister Pauline Tober. He is survived by daughters Adela Zarate, Rose Futterknecht, Christine Jones, and Susan Banks. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews including Teresa Diaz and Anita Castillo, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Floyd was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army stationed in Osaka, Japan, honorably discharged in December 1946. We didn’t realize until 2020 that he spoke Japanese. Retaining the Japanese language is an example of the amazing ability Floyd had to recall events and details from past decades. He was very self-sufficient in that he created whatever tool was necessary to complete a task rather than buying something ready-made. A man of humble beginnings, Floyd lived his life in this manner but was generous with others. He enjoyed the outdoors and took great pride in the care of his lawn. No one dared to walk on his grass! He was always very willing to share his knowledge of lawn maintenance and could direct even professionals on the proper way to trim a tree or raze one. In fact, he was still actively caring for his lawn and trees until the age of 94.
He held many jobs throughout his lifetime, beginning at a very young age. He took pride in everything he did and had a strong work ethic. Before retirement, he managed a landscape crew for UT Southwestern for nearly 20 years where he was praised for his good work.
Dad will be remembered and missed by family, friends, and many acquaintances he met along the way. He was compassionate with people who were in need and helped so many. As a senior citizen, he loved the attention received from his favorite restaurant servers to caregivers who thought very highly of him for his kind demeanor and humor. He always said he didn’t know why he made a joke about many things but that that was just his nature. There was much laughter when he was in the room telling stories.
We are comforted by Dad’s strong relationship with God and that he is now among the angels in heaven.
Pallbearers include Mike Velasquez, Paul Velasquez, Adrian Diaz, Jacob Munoz, and Joe Mendoza.
A visitation for Floyd will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Roselawn Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 11:00 AM with a committal after in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens
