Yvonne R. Hughes

Yvonne R. (Gray) Hughes – 93, of Scituate, passed away on March 28, 2023. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter Thomas Hughes, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage before his passing in 2006.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 30, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Herbert J. and Annie M. (Smith) Gray. Yvonne was a graduate of Hyde Park High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Boston University. After teaching, while raising her family, she started her own successful catering business, “Yvonne’s”, where her family created countless lifelong memories. She was the hardest working person and a force of sheer will. Her optimism was legendary, believing that anything could be conquered with a good walk, a cup of tea and hard work. She created such a wonderful home. “Yvonne’s” was the place where everyone liked to gather.

Devoted mother of Mark Hughes and his wife Karen of West Dundee, IL; Cindy Hughes and her partner Mary Ferguson of Scituate, Massachusetts; David Hughes and his wife Stacey of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; Malinda Curtis and her husband Jonathan of Blue Hill, Maine; Ellen Hughes of Blue Hill, Maine and Heather Hughes and her fiancé Billy Thompson of Holbrook, Massachusetts.

Grandmother of Kate Vasquez, Tessa Hughes, Laurena Mott, Thomas Adams, Samantha Curtis, Nathaniel Curtis, Alden Hughes, Elliot Hughes, and Owen Hughes and Great Grandmother of James and Avery Mott.

Loving sister of Norman Gray, Patricia Gaudet, Father George Gray, Herbert Gray Jr., Dorothy MacGaregill, Arthur Gray, Lauretta Gray and Kenneth Gray, who all predeceased her.

Also survived by her sister-in-law Kay Gray, many nieces, nephews and good friends that she considered family.

A visitation for Yvonne will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, Massachusetts 02066. A Funeral Mass celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Saint Mary of the Nativity, 1 Kent Street, Scituate Harbor, Massachusetts. Interment will immediately follow at Cudworth Cemetery, Cudworth Road, Scituate, Massachusetts. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
