William Michael Stenson, M.D. of Scituate MA, age 66, passed away January 29th, after a seven year battle with Multiple System Atrophy, a form of Parkinson's Disease. Dr. Stenson had a successful career as a physician in internal and pulmonary medicine. Bill received his education at Blessed Sacrament School in Jamaica Plain, Boston Latin School,, McGill University, and graduated from Georgetown Medical School in 1977.
Dr. Stenson completed his internship and residency at Harlem Hospital Center and Pulmonary,Fellowship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He then moved to Connecticut to practice medicine at Norwalk Hospital. He was a medical doctor for the remainder of his medical career at Brockton Hospital as Medical Director of the Respiratory Care Department and past President of the Medical Staff. He was a dedicated physician and “the cornerstone of the respiratory department”. Dr. Stenson was also an Assistant Clinical Professor at Tufts Medical Center
Bill’s love of life was evident to all who knew him. His brilliance, athleticism, loving nature and Irish wit charmed many. He was a physician loved by his colleagues, students and patients. Bill loved to ski, sail, golf, play basketball with his sons and ran the New York City Marathon twice; the ocean, beaches and waterways were his second home. Some of his favorite beaches were Minot Beach, Nantasket Beach,and Ocean City Maryland. He scuba dived all around the world. Cheering on the Boston sports teams was a favorite pastime as well.
Bill was born on July 14, 1951 in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts to Irish immigrant parents, James and Mary Keaveny Stenson. He leaves his devoted and loving wife, Tanya, and treasured sons James and Michael and his fiancee Micaela. In addition, he leaves his cherished family; his brother, James, and sisters and their spouses, Mary Theresa and Joseph Belmonte and Eileen and Norman Stevans, nieces; Joy, Lisa, and Audrey, nephews; Michael and Anthony. In addition, he leaves the Smith, Stevans and Belmonte families, cousins scattered around the world and childhood and life-long friends from the Heath Street Project in Jamaica Plain.
Special thanks to Deacon Paul Rooney and his wife Mary, Janice, Jessica, Debbie, and Christine who were so helpful during his difficult final days. The dedicated staff from Caretenders Visiting Nurses and Old Colony Hospice were equally devoted.
Bill will be sorely missed. After years of valiant struggle with his illness he has now passed on to “the lilt of Irish laughter, and the angels singing”.
Dr. Stenson’s internment will be private. His life will be celebrated in a Memorial Mass at St. Anthony’s Church, Cohasset, Ma. April 14th 2018 at 11:00am.
