He was the loving son of the late William and Gertrude (Foley) McDermott. He is survived by many relatives and dear friends.
During his studies at Winthrop High School, Bill qualified as an Eagle Scout. After two years in the Marine Corps, having earned the rank of Corporal, Bill enrolled at Boston College where he received his Bachelors and two Masters degrees. During his career as a teacher in education, Bill taught in the Scituate and Quincy public school systems. Bill enjoyed painting and woodworking . He was a photographer of note and he photographed many South Shore school sports teams in action for newspapers and school publications. Bill also wrote articles for and reported on local events for area newspapers. Bill was fond of animals, especially his dog, Holly, and his pet cats. He was a devoted fan of New England professional sports and of the teams of Boston College.
A Memorial Visitation will take place on Sunday, Nov., 8th from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, Massachusetts. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 9th at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate, Massachusetts. Burial will take place privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the Scituate Animal Shelter, 780 Chief Justice Cushing Hwy, Scituate, MA 02066.
