Born July 5, 1921 in Glen Cove, N.Y, son of the late Scottish and English immigrants, Benjamin and Dorothy Sutherland, he was a long time resident of Groton, CT. and Scituate, MA.
Mr. Sutherland is a 1940 graduate of Rumson High School, in New Jersey and holds an Engineering Degree from Monmouth College.
He served in the Army Air Force from 1942 – 1946 and in the Army Reserve Transportation Corp Army Engineers from 1942 – 1964. He was a Warrant Officer and Chief Engineer on Air Force Crash boats during the campaign in the Pacific.
He began his civilian career working for Bethlehem Steel Shipyard then at the American Ship Building Company. He retired from General Dynamics, Quincy, MA in 1986 as Chief Nuclear Submarine Designer. He was a long standing member of the Society of Naval Architects and The Reserve Officers Association.
A lover of sand and sea, Bob spent many happy hours sailing the waters of New England and the Caribbean. Being on the water was his favorite place to be.
He will be lovingly missed by his wife Marian Sutherland, his daughters Deborah and Carol, his son Robert, his grandson Christopher, and many nieces and nephews.
An informal get together will be held Friday, April 15th from 6pm to 8pm at the Sutherland home.
