Robert L. Carroll, age 95, recently of Cohasset and Quincy, passed away surrounded by his family on May 11, 2016. He is survived by his son Ronald L. Carroll, daughter-in-law Pat Carroll, both of Hingham; brother Eugene Carroll of Springfield, IL; grandchildren, Gabrielle Carroll, Leah Banks, Jesse Carroll, Erica Drue and Rick Kesinger; and his adored and adoring great grandchildren: Nora, Brennan and Ruby Carroll-Millins, Kate and Amelia Banks, and Cannon and Carson Drue. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia D. Barnett, and his daughter, Pamela S. Carroll.
Bob was born in 1920 to Charles L. Carroll and Olive Schrader Carroll and was the oldest of five children. He was a proud mid-westerner who lived most of his life in Illinois, before moving to Massachusetts in his later years to be closer to family. He was a WWII veteran of the US Army, serving his country in Panama and Europe. He and Virginia eloped shortly after a brief courtship and were married for 67 years. He was a life long employee of the Illinois Bell Telephone Company. Bob was a friend of Bill W for 47 years and helped many along their journeys. He enjoyed traveling the US, dancing, golfing, sharing his stories and knowing where home was. He was one of The Greatest Generation and will forever be in the memories of those who knew and loved him. Bob always said, “The only thing you have in this life that matters is your family.”
A memorial service and interment at Oak Ridge Cemetery will occur in Springfield, Illinois in late June. Donations in his honor and memory can be made to the American Cancer Society or The Pat Roach Hospice House of Hingham, MA.
