Mary Ann (Bough) Hyde, 78, of Scituate, MA passed away peacefully on December 25, 2022, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her loving husband, James, and is survived by her daughter Marianne Hyde and son-in-law Stas Zakrzewski of New York, her son James “Jamie” Montgomery-Hyde and son-in-law Paul Montgomery-Hyde of Scituate and son Scott Hyde of Colorado. She was a proud grandmother of Zoe, Juliette, Danny, Teddy and a caring aunt to the Dellera family.
Born in Santa Barbara, California in 1944, she was adopted as an infant by her parents, Lawrence and Ann Bough of Milton, MA and summered at the family house in Dennis, MA on the Bass River. In both locations, she was always surrounded by a menagerie of animals, given to her by her father, much to the chagrin of her mother. Mary Ann's love of animals was well known and throughout her life she had many pets including Lik-a-Pik, Shadow, Taffy, Patrick, Sampson, Nik-Nik, Skinny, Finbarr, Leah, Maya and adored her family’s pets Spike, Skunky, Bobo, Eliot, Thor, Scout, Gigi, Gus, Jack and Zen.
Mary Ann attended Newton Country Day School and Trinity College earning a degree in Social Work. Upon graduation she moved to New York City and was a bilingual social worker before relocating back to the Boston area. It was in Boston that she met her future husband, Jim, at one of his "legendary" parties on Joy Street on Beacon Hill. They wed in 1967 and it was the beginning of a life of family and friends filled with joy and world travels. The couple started their life in West Roxbury and then moved to Hanover where they raised their children before moving to Scituate in 1993, finding a beautiful home on the North River where they graciously entertained family and friends.
Mary Ann loved her home on the North River and never ceased to marvel at the beauty of the estuary through each season. Here she nurtured a beautiful garden and which in turn rewarded her with an ever-changing palette of colors, scents, and textures. Tending to her garden was never a chore as she loved all the effort that went into creating a place that connected her with nature.
Mary Ann started her sobriety in 1974 opening a beautiful new chapter making many lifelong friends who, in turn, imparted much love, support and wisdom in this journey. She was proactive in helping many others achieve their own sobriety and changed the lives of many. She considered herself extraordinarily fortunate to be embraced by great friends committed to such a powerful approach to healing and support.
Mary Ann recognized she was having memory issues when she was in her fifties and sought treatment. She received the diagnosis of dementia and accepted that with both sadness and grace. She was an active participant in her treatment and made it clear to her family how she wanted to navigate this illness with courage and dignity informing all decisions.
She resided with Jim as long as possible before moving into memory care at Linden Ponds. The last three years she was a resident of Cardigan Nursing Home in Scituate, with support from Beacon Hospice, where she was cared for with compassion and love which her family is deeply grateful for.
A private memorial service will be planned for both Mary Ann and Jim later this year.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary Ann's honor to the Scituate Animal Shelter https://scituateanimalshelter.org/ or the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/
