Michael Christopher McMahon died on Friday, October 20, from complications related to dementia. He was kind and humble, empathetic and funny, and he will be missed by his beloved family and his many friends.
Michael was born on July 26, 1947 in Birmingham, England to parents from County Clare, Ireland. He grew up in the middle of the city with three siblings, Mary, Frances, and Jimmy.
Through his hard work and intelligence, he became a Chartered Accountant, a career which eventually took him overseas on an adventure to New York, where he met the love of his life, Susan Lofaro. They married in 1975 in Tarrytown, New York, and moved back to England, where they welcomed their first daughter, Michelle Susan. Three years later, following a move back to the States, they welcomed Clare Elizabeth, and their family was complete.
Michael was a man of deep faith and many interests—music, football (the real British kind), humanitarian pursuits, and, of course, travel. His love of travel was a theme that carried throughout his life. In just 40 years, he managed to visit all 50 states. He toured the globe, from a horse caravan through Ireland, to a biking journey through the Alps, to a career spent visiting the most impoverished areas of Africa.
But his true love was time spent with family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and fun-loving grandfather. His extensive fan club will miss his sense of humor, easy smile, sparking eyes full of mischief, and his big heart.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan; his two daughters, Michelle McMahon Downer (Scott), Clare McMahon Graff (Rich); his four beloved grandchildren—Aidan, Maddie, Liam and Finn; and his many grandpets.
He is predeceased by his parents, Bridget and Michael McMahon, his sister, Mary Perry, and his niece and god-daughter, Elaine Harper.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Save the Children, where he spent the most meaningful years of his career in finance.
A Catholic funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, October 25, at 10:00AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scarsdale, NY, with a burial following at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, NY. A reception will immediately follow.
