My heart is so broken over Betty. She was the dearest sister in law I could ever ask for and I loved her so much. I will have beautiful memories of her for the rest of my life - the countless meals in my kitchen including her "Spanish Cream"; meals at her favourite resturant the Magic Wok; the outings; the trips around the bay, going "around the Tout" and catching a glimpse of the house where she was born; and in my younger days, the visits to your home in New York. Words fail us at a time like this, and whatever words we manage to find are always inadequate to express how we truly feel.
Our every thought and prayer are with you at this time of sorrow; yet, at the same time our thoughts go back to those pleasant memories and fun times we shared when you and Betty would visit the homeland of your birth in Newfoundland.
We especially remember when our two ships did not pass in the night, but rather docked at the same pier in Barbados, and we were all able to spend such a happy day together, far away from both our homes. How we enjoyed each others company that day!
God will give you the strength to see you through this most difficult of times.

Dear Walter:
Heartfelt and sincere condolences to you on the passing of your wife of 35 years, Betty. To describe Betty is to describe an angel, for that is what she was. Quiet, but never introspective; unassuming but never pretentious; loving but never maudlin; kind and caring to others, but never intrusive; gentle and always refined; gracious and always the perfect lady. How blessed you are to have had the privilege of loving a woman with such attributes, and to be so loved by her in return.  

We shared so many happy times together, and made memories too precious to ever be forgotten. How we will miss her annual visits to Newfoundland, and all that they entailed. One special highlight to be forever etched in our hearts will be the memory of our Woody Island trips together, and the fun and laughter we shared. 

Walter, the strength that Betty showed throughout her illness was truly remarkable, and your strength has mirrored hers in caring for her and coping with her illness. You must continue to be strong, and to take care of yourself, because that is what Betty would want. I would so love to be there to share in the Liturgical journey on Monday, but Joan, Theresa, Mike and families will complete that journey with you.  As I told you many times, you are the brother I never had, and I will always be there for you. Axel, the children and grandchildren send their dearest love and fondest condolences too.
