

Maria was born to Zosia and Czeslaw Salach in Warsaw, Poland on August 12th, 1929. She survived the war living in Warsaw for the first 5 years, then was deported to a forced labour camp. Following the war, in 1946 she immigrated to London, England with her mother and sister, where they were reunited with her father. She went on to complete high school and earn a degree in chemistry and math from the University of London. Maria met Jerzy Slubicki at Catholic youth group. They married on December 27th, 1954 and spent their honeymoon crossing the Atlantic on the ship Empress of Scotland, to build a new life together in Toronto. Maria stayed at home to raise her two young children. Once the children started school, she earned another degree in education at the University of Toronto and worked many years as a high school math teacher at Newtonbrook Secondary School. Maria was highly intelligent, caring, independent and dignified. She loved all animals and especially birds which she fed daily for many decades. She enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, Scrabble and spending summers with friends and family on Lake Kamaniskeg.
Maria was predeceased by her husband Jerzy in 2015. She is the cherished mother of Anna (Peter Dolan) and Chris (Jocelyne Drouin) and the much loved Babcia of Tamara, Shannon (Simon Legault), Julia and Eric.
