Helen Peterson passed away early Sunday morning, Sept. 22, 2013. She was born March 7, 1920 in Trenton, New Jersey. She married Edward Matthew Peterson, CPO of the U.S. Navy on April 25, 1942. They began their happy life together on Long Island, New York, where Helen was a Girl Scout leader. Together they raised four children, Elaine, Eileen, Edward, and Claire. In 1969 the family relocated to Savannah where her husband continued his career as flight instructor for Grumman Aerospace, now Gulfstream. Helen began working as a secretary, first for the Chatham County Engineers, and then as secretary to Sherriff Carl Griffin. After retiring in 1985, she continued working part time as manager for the DeRenne Plaza on Liberty Street. Helen’s hobbies included gardening, sewing, reading, and playing Mah Jongg with her dear friends. She was a parishioner at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, and her son Edward John.
She is survived by her three daughters, Elaine Henn of Cincinnati, Ohio, Eileen Edgcomb of Reno, Nevada, and Clarie Barsic of Savannah; ten grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to gather to pray the Rosary at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 7020 Concord Road on Wilmington Island at 5:30 P.M on Monday, September 30, 2013. Memorial Mass will take place at 6:00 P.M.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter the Apostle School.
The family wishes to thank Helen’s hospice nurses Liz and Lucy, as well as the staff at Buckingham South, especially Rita and Julie, and friends Ligia, Lee, Estella, Alice, and Patricia.
