Beloved husband of Doreen for 65 years. Cherished father of Derek (Kathleen) and Karen (Andy). Loving and adoring grandfather of Abby and Amy. Devoted brother-in-law of Alison (late Theo) Trudel.
John was born in the Haileybury Cobalt area of Ontario but grew up in Sault Ste. Marie. He was one of seven siblings born into the Carlson family. John was an accomplished athlete in numerous sports but considered hockey to be his favourite – the one sport he admittedly said he was never good at. John dedicated many years of his life to minor hockey as a coach and a volunteer, specifically at the Soo Pee Wee Arena and with Soo Major Hockey Association. John was a mainstay with his wife Doreen at the 50/50 draws at Soo Greyhound games for over 40 years. In recognition of his dedicated services, he was awarded the Sault Ste. Marie Medal of Merit in 2014.
His employment career found him at Algoma Steel where he worked for over 30 years in numerous capacities. John was always proud that he spent as many years working as he did in his retirement. His golden years were split between the hockey rinks during winter while in the summer, he found himself enjoying the camp and puttering at St. Joseph’s Island.
John will be greatly missed by many families, friends, and the hockey community in both the Soo and St. Joes.
The family would like to thank the staff at Maple View – Goulais Bay for their care and compassion shown to both John and Doreen during his stay at Maple View.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street East 705-759-2522) on Friday, November 15, 2024 from 2 pm to 4 pm. Memorial contributions made payable online or by cheque to the Alzheimer Society would be greatly appreciated. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.arthurfuneralhome.com for the Carlson family.
