We have wonderful memories of Art during his years as  Northern Affairs Officer' ' Art was always cheerful and helpful to everyone. He was an important person in the community. We remember his leadership of many voluntary organizations We were better for having  him in our life. In fond memory of one of the finest men I've known throughout my life, Uncle Art Glassford ... beloved husband to one of the finest women I've known (Aunt Loyis).  His character served as a role model to all of us, and it will be his legacy for many generations to come.

And to his loving family … all of you remain in our hearts and our prayers.  Your parents were community builders, developing much more than just social, municipal, and commercial capacity.  They were moulding people … affording us a tiny glimpse as to how a divine civilization might function.

Where do I begin to tell you how "broken" I felt to hear that your dad, barely 6 months after your mom, had passed on to his eternal reward. I know that for him, he is at perfect Peace with your dear mom, and there are no tears for them ... but those left with that big hole in their hearts will take a long time for the tears to subside.

It seems trite to say that we will pray that your sorrow passes quickly, yet that is really our only course, as God the giver of life has our days numbered in His book, He chooses the day that we arrive on this earth, and also the day we pass on to our eternal reward.

I have so many memories of your dad, but one in particular stands out in my mind, as it involves my loss in 1984. Both your dad and mom had attended my uncle Rev Clifford Weeks' funeral He had been like a dad to me all of my life, and his passing hit me very hard. Several days after the funeral, I was sitting on the steps of my deck in the back yard, sad and lonely, and your dad appeared and sat down with me. He read the same passage from Ecclesiastes that was read at your mom's funeral. I can never tell you how much that meant to me.

Just a thin layer below the wit and humour for which Arthur was known, there was a deep sensitivity for hurting people. I never forgot that particular visit. No fanfare, no audience, just one very special heart reaching out to a hurting soul.

Arthur also appeared at my mom's memorial. We had a funeral in Scottsdale, then brought her ashes back to Canada. I looked up, and there was Arthur in his famous red wool hat, there again to bring encouragement to me. I actually recounted the story of Arthur's timely appearance, so many years prior, in my moments of grief that day, and again read the passage from Ecclesiastes

There are many people who pass through our lives, some for a very short while others longer. Some plant their "footprints" on our hearts. Both your mom and dad did that for me! He was a man among men! Your mom was the woman praised in Proverbs. They will be missed greatly, but they are now "safely home" The imprint, of their lives will last throughout eternity!

My first recollections of Art go back to the 1970s and my TV interviews with him in his role with the province as Northern Development Officer at that time. The impression I got then continued for the decades I knew him – a man who knows his stuff, is passionate about what he does and was fun to know. He offered me and hundreds of others official greetings at Chamber of Commerce events for years in his role as Ambassador and, for me, a Remembrance Day ceremony wasn't complete without looking around to see Art in attendance. Art could take and enjoy a practical joke on him as well as delight in creating one on others. He enjoyed telling about his Rotary friends when they used black tape to add a letter to his ‘Old Art' licence plate that he didn't know about until it drew the attention of a Customs Officer as he was crossing the bridge. I smile now thinking of him telling how that unfolded. It is an honour in life when a great and memorable man such as Art crosses our path. My thoughts join those of so many others in condolences to the family but also in thanks to them for letting us share a part of him over the years.

The community lost Loyis such a short time ago and now Art. We don't get to know many couples like them.  Thankfully they have left a wonderful family to carry on.  Sending our heartfelt sympathy Pat and Mert Wright.

Joyce and I remember the good times we spent with the Glassfords over the years .We have known Lyois and Arthur for over 40 years and have been honoured to be their friends.My first meeting with Arthur was when he introduced me to be a member of the Rotary Club in 1969 and we became good friends ever since.
Arthur and Lyois were the highlights at many parties at our home especially our New Years party, Arthur with his wit always made the night sparkle.We also remember  the great times we had at the Rotary Dances and the Happy Gang meetings with Lyois and Arthur.We always were planning for the next party ,someone called us the party animals as there was always some thing going on, but we enjoyed the planning especially Bar B Qs,Boating etc.
We will always cherish their friendship.
Our last visit with Lyois and Arthur was last year when Joyce and I visited the Soo and the gang all got together for dinner it was very emotional time as we all enjoyed the time together, talking about good old times .
Our hearts go out to the Glassford family.

Your Dad was the best boss I ever had. (Northern Affairs)  He was so patient, kind and understanding and had a wicked sense of humor.  He also gave my daughter her first job.  She was 5 at the time and paid her $1.00 every time she washed his coffee cup for him!  He will be fondly remembered.
