August 24, 1910 – September 14, 2016
The family of Yee Mui Cheung announces her passing on September 14, 2016. Yee is survived by her son Wai Geen (Sum) Fung; grandchildren, May (Eric) UnRuh, Bing Yuen (Christine) Fung, Bing Wah Fung, Bing Wing Fung and Bing Cheng Fung; and great-grandchildren Brook Fung, Paige UnRuh and Katherine Fung. Yee is predeceased by her husband, Se Jun Fung; son and daughter in law, Kam and Lin Fung; and her great-granddaughter Lindsey UnRuh. Yee was born in Sun Wei Goo Chang, China on August 24, 1910. In 1945 her husband Je Sun passed, leaving her a widow and pregnant with her second son Wai Geen. Showing her strength and courage she raised Wai Geen and Kam as a single parent. She would remain in China after her son, Kam, daughter in law, Lin and grandchildren, May and Bing immigrated to Canada in 1962. Longing for adventure and in hopes of solidifying her family, she decided to immigrate to Canada to join her Canadian family in 1982 at the age of 72. Our first impressions was that she was so healthy and independent for her age. The long journey, language barrier and new country did not scare her. Over the years we found out just how strong and independent she was. She easily settled into a new way of life in Saskatoon. She took great joy in meeting her first great-granddaughter, Brook and quickly took over her care as Chinese grandparents always did. Memories of her carrying Brook on her back with huge swaddling cloth while working at her son’s restaurant or in the garden always impressed family and friends. She was equally joyous with the birth of her subsequent great-grandchildren. Family was always so important to Yee. She loved her families in Canada and in China. She kept in touch with her family in China through mail and many telephone calls. She would travel back to China twice on her own to visit family and friends back home. She lived independently on her own in the Chinese Riversdale House until 2012 at age of 102 she suffered a bad fall, which required her to move to Luther Special Care Home. Integration to Luther special care was made easier by discovering her good friend Joy Yee resided there too. Yee attended church services with Joy and embraced God and was baptized by Reverend Wilson Kaan in 2013. Her remaining years saw her health remained fairly stable but started to decline in early 2016. God in his good grace determined it was time for her to rest and she left this earth on Wednesday September 14, 2016. Her legacy is her family. We will miss and mourn her whilst never forgetting her.
