December 29, 1933 - July 26, 2015
With sadness, we announce Ted’s death after a long illness. Ted was born near Fosston, Saskatchewan to Polish immigrants Helena and Paul Gutek, the youngest of eight children and the only one born in Canada. He attended Hopeful and Mallard rural schools and graduated from Wadena High School. He earned B.A. and B.Ed. degrees from the U of S and studied in Quebec and France in order to master the French language. He taught in Pelican Narrows, Barrier Lake, Cando, Wakaw, and Mount Royal Collegiate in Saskatoon. He loved languages, and spoke Polish, Ukrainian, French and a little Cree as well as English. As a child of the Depression, frugality, food and family were of prime importance to Ted. In his free time he enjoyed curling, hunting, fishing and helping his brothers at the farm. After retiring from teaching, he purchased a cabin at Nesslin Lake. For several years, he worked as a hunting guide. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Helena; as well as by his four brothers: Frank, Walter, Stanley and Joseph; and three sisters: Katherine, Anne and Mary. He is survived by his wife, Julie; son Michael (Tricia); daughter Joanne (Chris Rochet); son Robert; and three grandchildren, Liam and Wallis Rochet and Phillip Gutek. He is also survived by one brother-in-law and four sisters-in-law; as well as several nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church (114 Kingsmere Place) at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29th. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society or St. Paul’s Hospital would be appreciated. Thank you to the kind, caring staff at Extendicare and to the friends and relatives who visited during Ted’s illness.
