1934 – 2019
Surrounded by her loving family, Mom passed away June 17, 2019, at Royal University Hospital at the age of 85.
Mom was born January 15, 1934, the fifth of eight children to Hildur and Otto Franson on the family farm northeast of Colonsay. She would reside in the area for the next 60 years, forging friendships that would last a lifetime. Mom attended Nicklet and Colonsay Schools. She was a member of the Colonsay-Elstow Poultry Club and in 1952, proudly earned a trip to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
In 1953, she married Henry Buchinski and together they raised eight children. Mom felt it was her calling to be a mother and indeed there were many besides her own children who reaped the benefits of her unconditional love, patience and support. Mom loved to nurture and was especially drawn to young children and baby animals.
Mom’s baking skills were legendary. As children we loved to come home from school to the aroma of fresh baked bread and cinnamon buns. Mom had a talent for making delicious meals out of next to nothing and it was never a problem to add another plate if there happened to be unexpected company.
Mom loved music, gardening, nature and babies. Dad shared her love of music and dancing, and memories of their graceful moves on the dance floor will always be remembered fondly.
She was a champion of the underdog and was our most ardent supporter. Mom never let a chance go by to show her love with a quick hug or encouraging word. This was especially true of the grandchildren and the greats. She attended every activity and event she could and made each child feel special by doing so.
Mom was very active in the community and she never failed to volunteer her time or caring nature as needed. Her Christian faith was very important to her and provided Mom with much strength and comfort over the years.
At age 60, Mom moved to Saskatoon to embark on a new chapter in her life. She put her baking/cooking skills to use for the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary and felt so rewarded to have her baking appreciated again.
Mom loved to travel and over the years, she and Dad made several trips across Canada and the U.S. mainland. Her lifelong dream to visit Hawaii was realized when her children gifted her with a trip upon her retirement. Trips to Europe with the Sisters; to Sweden with her siblings; and a Hawaiian cruise with Ken and Pam rounded out her travels before health issues interfered.
In keeping with her selfless nature, Mom has donated her body to the University of Saskatchewan Body Bequeathal Program.
Left to cherish her memory are her children and their families: Ken (Pam), Sarah (Alexis), Danielle (Wolf), Jeff (Tathlina), Niki (James), Laura (Andrew); David (Janis), Mike (Amanda), Jeff (Courtney); Larry (Tanya), Keeton, Kove, Kashia; Mark (Karli), Kevin, Ryan and their mother Cindy; Deb Stoltenberg (Erwin Mokosch), Jason, Trevor, Adam; Sherry Mah (Len), Stephanie, Kiana; Colleen; Susan, Joel (Jamie), Cody (Jordyn); Dan; great-grandchildren (her own and honorary ones): Isabella, Ben, Kason, Mikael, Tiana, Ayvah, Colton, Declan, Nahanni, Ellory, Frankie, Brynn and Chace; Siblings and in-laws: Don (Elaine) Franson, Einar (Yvonne) Franson, Vera Wyshynski, Herb Shier, Jeannette Franson, Olga Littmann and Helen Buchinski.
