Harry was born in the tiny village of Knock, Scotland, where his parents ran a post office and bakery. The family later settled in Glasgow, where after his high school education, Harry apprenticed in the shipyards on the banks of the Clyde River. After his apprenticeship, he sailed the high seas and traveled the world as a marine engineer serving aboard merchant marine vessels. Between voyages, he met and fell in love with Marion Robertson, and the two were married on June 1, 1957. In 1959, they immigrated to Canada, and eventually settled in Winnipeg, where in 1965 and 1966, they welcomed two sons, Ken and Ian. In 1974, while working for Royal Insurance as a boiler inspector, Dad accepted a transfer to Saskatoon. Here he threw himself into the community, volunteering to coach hockey and soccer. The number of youth he influenced and benefitted through his coaching efforts is uncountable.
Harry later found work with the Government of Saskatchewan as a boiler inspector, where his calm demeanor and helpful attitude garnered him a reputation that we, his sons, still hear tales of today.
Later in life, Dad took up playing hockey with the Saskatoon Old Timers. He greatly enjoyed the games and camaraderie, as well as the odd beer or scotch either in the dressing room or in later years at the Colonial Pub on 8th St, where he and the late Jack McLeod would hold court at their regular table.
He is survived by his loving sons Ken (Deanna), and Ian (Karen), and his grandchildren Simon and Claire (Ian and Karen), and step-grandchildren Brandon, Amanda, and Jennifer (Ken and Deanna). He will be sorely missed by the many he touched throughout his amazing life.
Harry requested no funeral. There will however be a gathering planned at a future date to allow us to come together and celebrate his life.
Arrangements entrusted to Thea Katchmar.
