Born 26 September 1943, in Calgary, to Herb and Nancy Surplis, Helen was a precocious child. She grew up in the city’s Rosedale neighbourhood, where she made life-long friends.
Helen married Glen Aikenhead in December 1965, in Calgary. They had two children together before divorcing in 1979. She worked at the University of Saskatchewan for nearly three decades, before retiring in 2011.
Helen was a quiet, loving, generous woman with a wry wit and a wonderful sense of humour. She loved to travel the world, play bridge, and be active in community clubs. Helen is greatly missed by her family and her many friends from both Saskatoon and Calgary.
Helen is survived by her two children, Chris Aikenhead (and his wife Dawn) of Calgary and Paul Aikenhead (and his wife Émilie) of Barry’s Bay. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Zoe Aikenhead, Ty Aikenhead, Flore Pigeon, and Léo-Paul Pigeon. Helen is survived by her brother, David Surplis, as well.
A celebration of Helen’s life will take place in the summer of 2022. Details to be finalized.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Hospice at Glengarda in Saskatoon.
