Brenda Koroll (nee Smith) was born March 24th, 1949 in Wolseley, SK to Gibson and Margaret Smith. She was the youngest of two girls. Shortly after, the family moved to Creighton, SK where she attended elementary school and then Hapnot High in Flin Flon for high school where she made sure she was on the honor role every year. Brenda played most sports throughout high school like softball and curling. Living up north close to the lakes you have the joys of fishing every weekend, which her family did.
After she graduated, Brenda moved to Saskatoon to attend the University of Saskatchewan where she took the nursing program. Once she got her degree she worked in the hospital for a few years before she began her passion of teaching the Nursing program at Kelsey Institute, then later moved into teaching the Home Care/Special Care Aide program. She enjoyed taking her students into the nursing homes and making sure they learned to take the best care of their patients in these homes. She was such a compassionate lady.
On May 5th, 1973, after dating for a short time, Brenda married Mel Koroll. They welcomed their first child, Tara three years later in 1976 and Jeff in 1978. Brenda loved being a mother and grandmother. There wasn’t a sporting event, Christmas concert, or any “special moments” that she missed of her kids and grandkids. Even when the early onset of dementia started with her, she still could pick out the grandchildren on the ball diamond or at their hockey games. She made sure to let everyone know that those were her grandchildren. She was so proud of all of them.
Brenda would spend many hours in the backyard gardening and sun tanning. Brenda loved the hot weather and took full advantage of all the sunny days laying on the trampoline enjoying Saskatchewan’s short summers. She was known for her canning of pickled beets, sauerkraut, and pickles. There were many family vacations that we will remember going to Blue Jay games, camping in the Blackhills, Disneyland and many trips to Chitek Lake, Echo Bay and Denare Beach fishing, picking mushrooms and berries.
Brenda is lovingly remembered and will be sadly missed by her husband of 49 years, Mel; daughter Tara Hofmann (Chad) and grandchildren Logan and Kaylee; son, Jeff Koroll (Cassie) and grandchildren Jayden, Talia and Dylan; brother-in-law Mike Krawchuk; nephews Rick (Debbie), Kevin (Natalie) and Greg (Lisa) and their families.
She was predeceased by her and Mel’s parents, Gibson & Margaret Smith and Harry & Mary Koroll, sister, Barb Smith, and sister-in-law Sylvia Krawchuk.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Sherbrooke Nursing Home for all the love and care they provided to Brenda during her stay.
