Sandra Victoria Thompson

Sandy was a graduate of Avoca High School, Avoca, NY. class of 1952. Sandy worked at the historic Waffle Shop Restaurant renowned as seen in the 1952 film "The Greatest Show on Earth", a place where Elvis once ate in 1954, and where she was filmed in a scene for the 1985 film "A Flash of Green". Sandy said that she had seen the film and she must have ended up on the cutting room floor.

Sandy ran the horseshoe-shaped counter; a favorite spot for locals from all walks of life to gather, eat and discuss the issues of the day. Sandy was known for her sunny personality, efficiency, big heart and quick wit. She ended up managing the restaurant for many years. Upon retirement she started her own sewing business making gymnastic apparel for students in training at local gyms including the YMCA.

Sandy played a very important role in the lives of her grandchildren. Selflessly loving, guiding and encouraging them all the way and providing for them in any way needed. She was also beloved by countless young gymnasts and their families that she came to know through her business.

Her hobbies included sewing, word puzzles and storytelling. She was friendly, positive, giving, witty, family oriented and very loving.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents Herbert & Maude; her husband, Clyde A. Thompson; her grandson, Christopher Forrester; and siblings, Joanne, Patricia, Dorothy Ormsby, Frank Helm and Elizabeth; her daughter-in-law, Shannon Forrester, and step son-in-law, Barney Powell

She is survived by her sons, Donald (Deborah) Forrester and Michael Forrester; step daughters, Tammy Powell and Donna Knorr; grandchildren, Derek (Shae) Forrester and Krystal Forrester; great granddaughter, Nycole Harrison; and brother, Scott (Connie) Helm.

A memorial gathering for Sandy will be held Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL 34232. with the memorial service starting at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow at the funeral home.
