Dear Charles and Virginia,
I just learned of Dr. Deibel’s passing and want to express my deepest sympathy to the entire family. I knew him as a legendary professor and had several occasions to hear his presentations and learn. He was down to earth, approachable, and I fond memories of many funny stories and anecdotes sprinkled throughout his presentations. 
Bob had a major impact on his students, colleagues and food industry in general. He will be missed.

Charles and Virginia,
I am saddened by the loss of your dad. I was an undergrad student of your father’s food micro course in 1978 at UW Madison and learned there was life for a food industry microbiologist after college. I have fond memories at FRI and IAFP meetings with Dr. Bob over the years and was so happy during our get togethers.  My fond memory was when I was able to get Dr. Bob and John Silliker together in Chicago about 10 years ago for a Food Industry Micro Roundtable Meeting. There stories were everlasting. My sincere condolences to your family.

Dear Charles and family,
I learned to day of Bob's passing.  I am truly saddened as your family has lost a father, a husband, a teacher, a wonderful human being.  I recall with great fondness taking food microbiology class in the two story walk-up in Chicago in 1994, and the impact he and Dr. Goodfellow had on me and the positive impact they had on my career.  I came to love and respect Dr. Bob as I called him and I will cherish all the teasing and poking he directed to me over the years, as I knew this was a sign of friendship.  May you be comforted in this time of sorrow.

I just learned of Bob’s passing and want to express my deepest sympathy to the entire family. I took a  food microbiology course from Bob decades ago. This turned out to be far more important to my career than I might have surmised at the time. In addition to what I learned in the course, Bob had a major impact on me through our informal conversations. He was one of the persons who helped convince me to stay in graduate school, although he may not have been aware he was doing so at the time. Bob’s contributions in academia, and the broader world of food safety, were huge. He will be missed.

I took food microbiology from Bob at the University of Wisconsin and he was on my Master's committee.  Bob was one of the most knowledgeable meat microbiologists I know; his contributions to that field were numerous.  He will be remembered fondly by those who worked with him over the years.
