Matthew Garrett, an esteemed educator, gifted musician, hall of fame inductee for bowling (13 perfect scores), a friend and beloved by all passed on December 5, 2023 in Sarasota, Florida. Matt’s charisma, warmth, and kindness touched the lives of everyone he met throughout is remarkable 96 years.
Matt’s professional life was marked by his dedication to students and staff as a trusted secondary school administrator. His calming presence, larger-than-life personality, and passion for uplifting students were keys to his successful work with youth. In addition, to being addressed as Mr. “G.” he was frequently called dad because students considered him a father figure.
Beyond his professional life, he enjoyed the hobbies of bowling and golf. Matt was a trailblazing bowler winning many accolades including being inducted into the Greater Flint Area USBC Hall of Fame and the Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed golf for its challenges and accompanying camaraderie. One of the highlights of his golf game was the “trash talking” he participated in after the 18 holes.
Matt Garrett leaves to cherish his wonderful memories his wife of 53 years, Winnie; daughters, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Rhonda; son, Damon; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Matt leaves a legacy of being a talented musician who played many instruments but loved the trumpet. Early in his career as the band director at Manassas High School in Memphis, Tennessee he mentored students that became renowned musicians. With his beautiful voice, he sang in the Inspirational Voices Choir at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, Flint, Michigan. Over the years, Matt Garrett cultivated many friendships as well as added joy to everyone he met.
Interment was held in Houston, Texas.
