Margaret Ann Carey Sherkey

Margaret Ann Carey Sherkey died on February 6, 2016 at Palmer Ranch in Sarasota, FL. She was 88 years old. Maggie was born in Salisbury, Maryland on June 30, 1927. Her parents were the late Joseph Samuel Carey and Blanche Hall Carey. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Carey Phillips (Bryan); her niece, Linda Downing Meade (Bob); her nephew, William J. Downing (Debra); her great nieces, Staci Downing Sousa (Mike) and Jennifer Downing Underwood (Nate) and her great great niece, Aubrey Sousa. She answered to Margaret, Margaret Ann, Maggie, Sister and Auntie. Maggie is remembered by numerous cousins, students and teachers in MD, hundreds of friends and she was especially proud of Dr. Kimberly C. Lang, one of her students. Maggie graduated from Wicomico High School in 1944 and from Salisbury Teachers College in 1947. She started her teaching career in Glen Burnie, MD in 1947. She received her Masters of Education degree from University of Maryland, College Park, MD. She became the principal of many elementary schools in Anne Arundel County, MD. Maggie married Robert A. Sherkey in Salisbury, MD in 1956 and they were married for 42 years until his death on December 14, 1998 . After Maggie and Bob's careers in education, they made their retirement home in Sarasota, FL. They enjoyed being involved in their church, Bee Ridge Presbyterian Church in Sarasota. Maggie was proud of her affiliation with the church and served on several committees there. Margaret admired and always mentioned ‘the Preacher’, Rev. Karl Kling whenever she had a chance. Maggie will certainly be remembered for her gracious charm, her bubbly personality and her ever-present sense of humor and storytelling. She was a loving, loyal and generous friend, sister and aunt. She was grateful to those who faithfully tended to her though out her life. God blessed Maggie and all who knew her. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 21, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Bee Ridge Presbyterian Church and interment in the Memorial Garden at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Bee Ridge Presbyterian Church, 4826 McIntosh Rd., Sarasota, FL. 34233 in memory of Margaret C. Sherkey.
