

Laura Sheehy Hewes, 75, passed away on October 31, 2016 in Sarasota, FL. She was born at Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc, WI to the late Patrick and Rose Sheehy on October 18, 1941. Outside of Wisconsin, Laura lived in Atlanta, Savannah, Orlando and Sarasota.
She is survived by her daughter Brigid Hewes Saah (Shane) of Sarasota, FL and brother, Richard Sheehy (Dorthy) of Appleton, WI.
Laura earned her B.S. Ed. at Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI and her M.A. Ed. At Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA and was a Fellowship Recipient. She spent her career teaching others including an assignment with the Department of Defense where she taught second through fourth grades at US Air Force bases in Tripoli, Libya, Brindisi, Italy and Madrid, Spain. She also taught at State College of Florida.
She took a special interest in helping children with learning challenges and was a past president of the Sarasota Association for Children with Learning Disabilities as well as a past board member of the Florida Association. She was also a member of the Human Rights Advocacy Committee and the Golden City Woman's Club.
Laura loved being a mom. She also loved to travel, play bridge and sewing. Proud of her Irish heritage, she was known on occasion to belt out an Irish ballad or pub song! Laura always had a joke on her tongue and a twinkle in her eye. She will be dearly missed by her family and her friends. Ciao baby!
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 1 PM at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 5394 Midnight Pass Road, Sarasota, FL 34242.
