It is with with extreme sadness that we announce the unexpected death of John B. Ward, 70, of Sarasota Florida on March 3, 2022. He is survived by his loving family: mother Marilyn, brother Thomas, sister Catherine, daughter Kathryn, granddaughter Caroline, and stepchildren Laura, David, and Jon.
John grew up in rural southeastern Wisconsin. After graduating from high school, he travelled throughout Europe until his lack of funds forced him to return home. Upon returning home John decided to pursue a career that would allow him to combine his love of the outdoors with golf, and obtained an associate degree in turf grass management from Penn State University. He eventually moved to Sarasota with its abundant opportunities to ply his trade.
John loved Sarasota. He was happiest when he was out fishing on Sarasota Bay. When not on the water he could be found listening to music and watching his beloved Tampa Bay Lightning. Generous to a fault, John enjoyed hosting family and friends, and often joked about “other people’s food” in his refrigerator.
For the past 7 years, John worked his “dream job” as the superintendent of the Legacy Golf Club at Lakewood Ranch. With an affirming management style, critical eye for detail and a lifetime of experience, he helped develop the Arnold Palmer Championship course into an unparalleled venue in SW Florida. John was loved as a loyal, kind, understanding and generous boss, and will be remembered for his easy demeanor and infectious smile. A colleague described John as “sunshine in a clear blue sky.” The golfing community, friends, and family have lost a special person.
John will be interred as part of a living reef. His resting place will benefit marine life and help ensure a healthy Gulf of Mexico for future generations.
