John Vincent Cavanaugh

John Vincent Cavanaugh, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully. Born on July 9, 1940, in Chicago, John lived a remarkable life filled with love, music, and a passion for making a difference.

John's life was deeply intertwined with the love of his life, his late wife Ellen Cavanaugh. Together, they shared a remarkable bond, celebrating 50 years of marriage before Ellen's passing four years ago. John met Ellen at the Evanston Presbyterian Church and they were married on October 12, 1968, in that same Illinois church in a service officiated by Ellen’s father. John and Ellen's adventures together, especially their love for traveling, brought them immense joy and created memories that will be cherished forever. In the more recent years, John found companionship and shared a special bond with Valerie DiPasquale, both understanding the journey of being widowed.

Family meant everything to John, and he was a cherished father to his children: Caryn Patterson (Steve), Mary Ellen Bass (Billy), and Jim Cavanaugh. His grandchildren, AJ Bass (Marlena), Savannah Bass, Jonah Patterson, Caleigh Patterson, Alexandra Cavanaugh, and Nicholas Cavanaugh, and one great grandchild, Bella Bass, brought immense joy.

During his younger years, John served in the Navy aboard the esteemed aircraft carrier, USS Independence, proudly representing his country.

John's professional journey began when he partnered with his father, Vince, in 1968 to purchase Super-Sensitive Musical String Co. Their mutual passion for music led them to move the company and family to Sarasota in 1972. As the owner of Super-Sensitive Musical String Co. and Black Diamond Strings, John dedicated himself to research and development, working closely with renowned musicians to enhance the quality of musical strings. He became affectionately known as the "G-String Man.”

Beyond his professional achievements and love for music, John had a zest for life that was contagious. Always armed with a ready smile and a quick wit, he delighted those around him with his sense of humor, often cracking jokes and bringing laughter to any gathering. John was also known for his unique trademark of paying with two-dollar bills, adding a touch of charm to his transactions.

John was an active member of the Rotary Club. He was a founding member of the Sarasota and Manatee Manufacturing Association (SAMA). John served as a Deacon and Elder at the Church of the Palms. Additionally, his love for antique cars, particularly Buicks became a part of his identity.

A celebration of John’s Life will be held at Church of the Palms, 3224 Bee Ridge Rd, Sarasota, FL 34239 January 2, 2024 at 2:00 PM followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of John can be made to the Church of the Palms, Sarasota Orchestra or TideWell Hospice, Inc.
