After graduation from William Taft High School in Chicago, he attended University of Illinois on an Evans Scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. He enjoyed participating in many sports including running track, basketball, volleyball, and baseball.
He received his degree as Physical Therapist from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He received his Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration from Baylor University, Waco, TX. Mr. Stanek practiced as a Physical Therapist in Illinois, Virginia, Texas, Georgia, and Florida.
Mr. Stanek enlisted in the US Army, served in the US Medical Service Corps, and served two tours in the Vietnam War during 1966-1967. He received the Bronze Star Medal as well as other US Army commendation medals and meritorious service achievement awards. He was a Paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
Don loved horses, especially thoroughbred horses, and loved German Shepherd dogs all his life.
Don leaves behind his beloved wife, Rose Cape, as well as many friends, relatives, and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his loving brother, Robert J. Stanek, who passed in 2013.
Funeral Services were conducted by Robert Toale & Sons Funeral Home at 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL. Mr. Stanek is buried at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL.
