Dr. Bernard Stein was born in the Harlem part of New York City on August 17, 1920. After attending City College of New York Dental School, he served in the Army in World War II, working as a Dentist for the 294th Combat Engineers. He was stationed in Berlin after the war where he met his future wife Ilona. She was a concentration camp survivor. They married and spent several years in Berlin before returning to New York. The couple moved to Glens Falls, New York where they lived for many years while Dr. Stein practiced as a dentist in the New York State prison system. Upon Dr. Stein’s retirement in 1975, the couple moved to Florida. The Steins were married for 63 years until Ilona’s death in January 2006. In the years since her passing, Dr. Stein wrote a book about their love story, “A Story of Two Uncommon Lives”, Peppertree Press, 2007, and spent a great deal of very rewarding time supporting his friends, many from a Hospice grief group. Dr. Stein was just a few months short of his 98th birthday.
We shall miss his kindness and generosity very much.
