Virginia (Jennie) Rose Gross, age 74, a resident of Semmes, AL and member of Dayspring Baptist church, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2023. Jennie was born and raised in Savannah, GA. She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Wave Brooks.
She spoke fondly of the simpler times of her youth. She reminisced about learning to sew her own clothes and Sunday afternoon drives with her family. She attended Jenkins high school and Armstrong State College. In 1970, Jennie married Harold William (Bill) Gross. Soon after, they moved to Alaska, and she began her adventures as a Coastguardsman’s wife and eventual mother. Over the years, Jennie turned many houses across the United States into homes for her family before they settled in the Mobile area. She enjoyed traveling, walking, Zumba, volunteering, sweet tea, and porch sitting. She was entertained by her grandsons and the comedy of Jay Leno.
Jennie is survived by her husband of 53 years, her only child (Katherine Gryzenia), son-in-law (Joey Gryzenia), grandsons (Maddox and Miller Gryzenia), sister (Nancy Ogletree), sister-in-laws (Judith Greenlee and Barbara Gross), brother-in-law (Chuck Gross), nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Her “friends that are like family” include her Coast Guard family, work family, neighborhood family, and church family. She brought us all joy, and we will miss her forever.
Jennie will be laid to rest in a private burial in Savannah.
