Robert S. McCoy, retired US Army field medic, 77, of Creola, AL, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, December 21, after complications from pneumonia.
Robert was born to Robert L. and Myrtle McCoy on May 21, 1943 in Shubuta, MS. He lost his father in January of 1945 in the Battle of the Bulge near the end of World War II. After the war, he moved with his family to Chickasaw, AL and entered school.
Robert met his wife Carolyn during high school and the two were married in April of 1962 and had three daughters. After many years in the National Guard, Robert went active duty with the US Army in 1971 and moved his family to the Pacific northwest. Many moves ensued and the family was not always together. Robert lived in Seoul, Korea and also in Germany as part of his military service.
Robert and Carolyn returned to Alabama when he retired in 1990 and made a home in Creola where they happily help raise grandkids, adopt many pets, and make friends there that have blessed him every day they spent together. The support of the friends and family who love him so have carried him through the years since losing his beloved wife in 2010.
Robert was a lover of the Lord, and of people. A faithful member for many years at Fountain of Faith Missionary Baptist Church, he reached out to those around him in every way to support someone in need, in any way he could, all to the glory of the Lord.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lloyd and Myrtle Covington McCoy and his wife Carolyn Blocker McCoy. He is survived by his daughters Christine Mulligan (Jack) of Methuen, MA, Michelle Thompson (Jerry) of Brierfield, AL, and Robin McCoy (Sam) of Creola, AL, grandchildren Jake Mulligan of Boston, MA, Molly Mulligan of Nashua, NH, and Jay Thompson of Brierfield, AL, sister Margaret McCoy of Satsuma, AL, brother Gary Brown of Satsuma, AL and sister Nancy Andrews of Mobile, AL, many nieces and nephews, cousins and cherished friends. The family would especially like to thank JV Harbin IV for his devoted care and loyal friendship to Robert.
Services will be held at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland, AL on Saturday, December 26, at 10 am, with pallbearers Jerry Thompson, Jay Thompson, Molly Mulligan, Sam Lewis, Hannis Lewis, and JV Harbin IV, with military graveside service to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
