Malcum Harvey Gatewood passed away peacefully on September 9, 2023, in Foley, Alabama. Born in Brewton, Alabama on October 21, 1947, to Daniel & Rachel Gatewood, he grew up in Satsuma, Alabama. He served as President of his Senior Class in 1966 at Satsuma High School and continued many close friendships with his classmates over the years. After community college, he attended the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of South Alabama before graduating from Southeastern Regional Credit Union School in Athens, Georgia. In 1971, he married the love of his life, Linda, and it was said thereafter that you never thought of one without thinking of the other. The two built a life together in North Mobile County over the next 45 years, where they worked and raised their two sons, Matthew & Daniel. During a successful career in banking and finance, Malcum served in various leadership roles at the state and local level, including Credit Union League Board Director and Chapter Officer. His values and beliefs, coupled with a strong work ethic drove success in all aspects of his life.
Faith, family, and Auburn football were his passions. Nothing made him happier than watching his four grandchildren as they learned to fish, swim, dance, cheer, play football and baseball. Like his father, Malcum loved to “tinker” and had a unique talent for small engine repair which often produced some rather interesting contraptions! Malcum had a kind heart and was well loved. He could always find the humor in any situation and kept us all laughing with his stories of life and the characters he met along the way. His children’s friends were always welcome in his home and his interest in their lives built relationships that continued through their adulthood. After retirement, Malcum & Linda moved to Foley, Alabama, where they became involved in their church and community, developing a wonderful circle of friends and neighbors.
Malcum is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sandra Clements. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, his sons Matthew Gatewood (Ashley), and Daniel Gatewood (Rainer), his beloved grandchildren, Sydney Elizabeth Gatewood, Shepard Ellison Gatewood, Edith Kate Gatewood, and Sally Pennington Gatewood, his brothers, Tommy Gatewood and Andy Gatewood and their families. He leaves behind nieces, nephews, sister- and brother-in-law, Diane and John Peavy, and special cousins, Janice and Danny Daniel, along with many other cherished friends.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caring and skilled professionals at Southern Cancer Center, South Baldwin Hospital, and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, for their excellent care and loving kindness to Malcum and his family.
