John Shelley – a 98 year-old native of Excel, AL and longtime resident of Chickasaw passed away in Bay Minette, AL on Sunday, August 14, 2016. Mr. Shelley was a World War II veteran of the United States Army and retired from International Paper Company after many years of service as a pipe fitter. Mr. Shelley was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chickasaw where he served as a deacon and always provided the refreshments for the church game room. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening and was known as an excellent grill master. Mr. Shelley was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide and Atlanta Braves fan.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary E. Shelley, and son-in-law, William Cotner. Mr. Shelley is survived by two daughters, Johnette Cotner and Glenda Repsher (William); grandchildren, Todd Cotner, Suzanne DeWitt, Jeanine Ghioto, and Amy Repsher Gerbig; six great-grandchildren; three great, great-grandchildren; close friend, Mabry Harbin; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral home in Saraland on Friday, August 19, 2016, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, August 18, from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
