Paula passed away after a brief
illness on January 10, 2013. Victor
was born on September 9,
1932, to Juan Salas and Concepcion
Martinez in Santa Paula,
Calif. Victor was one of 13 children
born to the Union of Juan
and Concepcion Salas. Victor attended
elementary school, and
jr. high school in Santa Paula
and graduated from Santa Paula
High School in 1951. He was
very proud to be a Cardinal and
was a member of the Santa Paula
High Track Team and had the
pleasure of playing on the 1950
and 1951 Champion Football
Teams as a tailback for the Cardinals.
Victor and his brother,
Robert, worked as radio disc
jockeys for KSPA Radio Station
owned by his late father, Juan
Salas.
After high school Victor
served his country as a member
of the United States Air Force
where he was stationed at Brize
Norton Air Force Base the home
of the British Royal Air
Force sixty five miles northwest
of London, England. Victor was
a radio operator and his orders
took him throughout Europe and
parts of North Africa. When his
duty was over, Victor returned
to Santa Paula where he met and
married, Rachel Santos. Victor
and Rachel had three sons, Victor
Salas, Jr., Steven John Salas
and Michael Daniel Salas.
Victor worked many years as
a draftsman and engineer for
Raytheon and Infared Industries
in Carpentaria. At the same time
he was the owner of Salas T.V.
located right next to the “El Brilliante
Market” owned by his father
Juan Salas and later his
brother Sam Salas. Victor would
work for the Limoneira Water
Company as a draftsman helping
to design the water treatment
system for the city of Santa Paula.
He also was civic minded and
sat on the Planning Commission
for many years and had the honor
of having a street named after
the family.
Victor along with his friends
Al Escoto and Ray Gonzalez began
the Mexican American
Chamber of Commerce that
would sponsor the Annual Firework
Show and the proceeds
would be given as Scholarships
for Santa Paula High School Students.
Victor was a tireless
worker who was always looking
for new business ventures and
he purchased a Gopher Trap
Business in Santa Paula where
his sons, Steven and later Michael
would work making traps.
Victor was also a member of El
Buen Pastor United Methodist
Church in the city of Santa Paula
and loved singing in the choir.
Victor was devout Methodist
and later in his life would sing
and give prayer at the Senior
Center in Santa Paula and different
churches in Fillmore. Towards
the end of his life, Victor
could be found with Rachel and
his son, Michael, at the Company
where he loved to watch movies
and enjoy each other’s
company. He was a fan of the
Lakers, Raiders and Dodgers
and passed that on to his boys.
Victor was preceded in death by
his son, Steven John Salas and is
survived by his wife, Rachel Salas;
his two remaining sons, Victor
Salas, Jr. and Michael Daniel
Salas; their children and his
many grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the
direction of Funeraria Del Angel
Stetler Mortuary. Viewing will
be held in Santa Paula on Thursday,
January 17, 2013 followed
by his funeral on Friday January
18, 2013, located at 738 E. Santa
Paula Street in the city of Santa
