Lorene was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan, on March 5, 1938 to Archibald and Muriel Barbour. In 1956, she met C. Edward Collins, whom she married in Great Falls, Montana, in the same year. Over the next 10 years she bore seven children, and worked as a freelance writer and editor. She and Ed made their homes in Michigan, California and Pennsylvania, as Ed's writing career developed. In 1968, Ed and Lorene finally settled in Edmonton, Alberta Canada, where they made their home for the next 27 years. Among the positions she held were founder and editor of Trade Winds Magazine, founder and director of Catholics United for the Faith Canada, and editor of the Alberta Legislature's official record, The Hansard. After retiring in 1995, Lorene moved with Ed to Lethbridge, AB, to be near her aging mother. In 2000, Lorene and Ed moved to Sarnia, ON to assist her son Stephen's family through heart surgeries for their infant granddaughter, Stella. In 2001 she was asked by Fr. De Valk, editor of Catholic Insight Magazine to write a history and critique of the new Catholic catechism that had been introduced in Canada in the 1970s. The result of his request was her book Salvation Redefined.
Lorene was preceded in death by her brother John Keith Barbour (April 2013), her husband of 57 years, Edward, (November 2013), and by two infant sons, Brian and Nicholas Collins.
