surrounded by her family and friends. She was born on January 17th, 1926 to
Rogers and Ida Dew in Ferriday, Louisiana.
Dorothy was a hardworking, strong-willed, and ambitious woman. Growing up during
segregation, given her background in agriculture, she took a rare path pursuing a
career as a registered nurse. In 1949 she graduated from Grady Nursing School in
Atlanta, Georgia. Shortly thereafter, in 1951 Dorothy moved to San Francisco, where
she worked at the University of San Francisco Medical Center and started her career
as a labor and delivery nurse. Forty-two years later, she retired, after having a long
career caring for a variety of young and old patients.
Dorothy made the most of her time in San Francisco finding fun, friendship, and love.
There she met her lifelong friend, Virginia Duncan who introduced her to her future
husband, Isaac Oliver, a U.S. Army soldier. Isaac and Dorothy married in San Francisco
and soon began their life with an adventurous spirit, traveling and living in places like
Germany, Hawaii, and Massachusetts. Following her husband Isaac’s retirement from
the Army, they settled permanently in Sunnyvale, California, where they raised their
children and built a life together.
Dorothy is survived by children Glenda, Roger, Doris, grandchildren Leonard, Michelle,
Tracie, Kujiona, Zaire, and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister,
Wilma Neville. She is preceded in death by her parents Rogers and Ida Dew, her
husband Isaac, and her siblings Camille, Nathaniel, and Rogers.
