Ronald “Ron” C. Mers died of Acute Leukemia on Wednesday May 1st, 2024 peacefully and comfortably with his family and friends around him. He fought so hard to stay but with broken hearts and profound sadness we imagined the Lord closed his arms around him and whispered, “Come to me.”
Ron who had enjoyed robust, good health all his life began being treated for Chronic Leukemia days after his 80th birthday in January. But in mid March the Chronic Leukemia progressed to Acute Myeloid Leukemia. But even his best drive, best fairway shot and his ace putt were not good enough with his match play with the dreadful illness.
He is survived by his 2 sons, Michael married to Jennifer with 3 boys (Avery and twins Zachary and Samuel). Ron was fortunate to have his son Michael and family across the street from him for the past 21 years. His other son David married to Amy with 4 children (Cooper, Alexis married to Jaden, Zoe, and Landon) reside in Heber, Utah.
He is also survived by his beloved wife, golf buddy and best friend Vivian. He left her not only with warm and fond memories but also left her his thousands of golf clubs, putters, grips, golf covers, golf books, other people’s golf balls and 3 shipping containers full of special treasures, She hopes!
He is also survived by his step daughter, Ashley married to Jim Galasso. Jim says that they don’t make a breed like Ron anymore.
He is also survived by a sister, Gail married to Henry Johnson and niece Pamela and nephew Gordon and great nieces and great nephew.
Ron was a graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, class of 1966. He became a Captain and gave them 27 years of service. He is very proud of his close knit class of ‘66.
He worked as an engineer for Southern California Edison, then he started his own business in the wrecking / auto dismantling business. He also was the President of their association (SCADA). Then in the mid 90’s he started an online business (golfclubfinder.com), more as a hobby and adjunct to his passion for golf. He took pride in sharing his wisdom and love of the game to everyone he met. He enjoyed his adventures as an entrepreneur.
He was welcomed in heaven by his parents, Olive and Comer Mers, and his brothers Oliver and Greg. It gives comfort to those he left behind that he is with them now. Ron is probably enjoying golf with his buddies in the fairways of heaven.
P.S. We forgot to share he had two holes in one in his golfing career
A funeral service for Ronald will be held Sunday, May 19, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Fairhaven Memorial Park Mortuary, 1702 Fairhaven Avenue, Santa Ana, CA 92705, followed by a reception from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
