Monica Luna

On Wednesday, July 21, 2021, Monica Luna passed away at the young age of 37. Monica (aka Presh) was born on January 26, 1984, in Westminster, CA. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree and Teaching Credentials from Cal State Fullerton and taught in the Garden Grove Unified School District for 14 years. On December 15, 2017, she married Alfonso Santoyo.

Monica (Presh) was very family-oriented. In her roles as wife, daughter, sister, auntie and Godmother, she loved spending time with family and friends, and always went out of her way to support those she cared about. Tia/Nina Presh had a strong, special bond with her adorables (nieces and nephews), would often plan special activities for them at family functions, and attend their games and recitals/shows. Sunday family dinners were always a chance to reconnect with Presh with laughs and love.

Monica led a life of servitude. She was a dedicated educator who continually went above and beyond in her role as teacher and mentor. In addition to her US History classes, Monica was an advocate and mentor for her AVID students. She served as chair of the GGEA Human Rights Committee, just one avenue through which she supported those at risk or less fortunate. It was never a surprise to get an email or text from Monica asking for supplies for a donation drive. Monica also participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Orange County and was a long-time mentor of her “little sister” Alyssa.

Just as strong as her servitude was Monica’s passion for life. She loved traveling and even spent a summer abroad teaching in China. Much to the chagrin of her mother, Monica often trotted the globe solo before finding her life partner in Alfonso. She also shared the family passion for the University of Southern California, and was an exemplar of the Trojan fighting spirit. Many fond memories were created at USC Football games and tailgates. Monica enjoyed relaxing with a bottle of wine surrounded by family and friends. She was known for an infectious smile, a quick wit, a kind and compassionate spirit, and a lively debate around politics grounded in liberal ideology.

Monica was preceded in death by her father, Jose Luis Luna. She is survived by her husband Alfonso, mother Teresa Salazar, brother Rene Luna, sister Susana Francis, sister-in-law Liliana Luna, brother-in-law Christopher Francis, and five nieces and nephews: Alex, Sienna, Andy, Camille and Allie. She also received love and support from the Santoyo Family, uncles, aunts, and many cousins.
