Betty Jean Hjort was born in 1931 to parents of Swedish heritage. She was raised in Foreston, a small town in central Minnesota. Her father, Bill Hjort, was a local businessman, and her mother Mabel was a teacher. Betty attended Bethel College, and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in primary education. After graduation, she and her friends left Minnesota for the warmer climate of Tucson, Arizona.
As a first-grade teacher in Tucson, Betty met Don Webster, an Air Force pilot. They were married in Tucson in 1956, and had their first son, Bill, before leaving Arizona for Southern California, where Betty and Don Webster spent the rest of their lives.
Betty loved children and taught kindergarten at Fairhaven and Handy elementary schools. Betty was very musical, playing piano and singing as a member of the choir at Trinity United Presbyterian Church for forty years. She loved her church community and served in many capacities throughout her life.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Betty is survived by her three children, Bill, Kristi and Brett. She leaves four grandchildren, Katherine, Kristopher, Michelle, and James. She is also survived by her brother, Bob Hjort.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 13922 Prospect Ave, Santa Ana, 92705 at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 13. Betty’s wish was that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the music program of Trinity United Presbyterian Church.
