Born and raised in Griffin, Georgia, she and her husband, George A. Hanson (predeceased), were high school sweethearts and married following their first year of college. After their marriage, Sue quit school to support George while he finished college. A stay-at-home mom for many years, she returned to work and then college in her 40s. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Georgia Southern University. Upon completion of her degrees, she worked for more than 18 years in the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia, serving several campuses including Georgia Southern University, Dalton State College, West Georgia Technical College, and Chattahoochee Technical College. She and George moved to Big Canoe, Georgia, in 2000.
Sue will be remembered for her dedication to her work and family, and her love of gardening, decorating and antiques, travel, history, and animals.
Sue is survived by her children and their families: Todd Hanson and his wife Cindy; Jill Hanson and her husband Wilson Harris; two grandchildren, Jude and Ella; as well as her brother Jim Powers and his family.
A memorial service will be held in August. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Integrated Memory Care program at Emory University.
