Sheldon Charles Brooks, age 95, of Atlanta, GA passed away peacefully, January 8th, 2021, surrounded by his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois (Rush) and grandson Lochlan Brooks. He is survived by his sons, Stanton Brooks (Bill Parmer) of Atlanta, GA and Daniel Brooks (Fiona Boneham) of Brooklyn, NY, his grandchildren Xena, Iolanthe, and Prajna, as well as his former wives, Helen Brooks and Barbara Jaroka, and partner, Rosemary Quillin.
A first-generation-American born to Dora and Harry Brooks in Minneapolis, MN, on July 5th, 1925, Sheldon attended North High School and the University of Minnesota. He joined his father’s business, Tri-State Displays, designing and fabricating premium point-of-purchase displays and marketing materials. He transformed the business into Dynamic Merchandising, Inc. and began producing psychedelic, personalized stickers, later acquiring the Ricky Ticky Sticky Company, famously known for the vinyl daisies on VW Beetles in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Sheldon also worked with greeting card companies, food companies, breweries, and other nationally-based corporations to develop and manufacture their marketing materials.
Sheldon’s entrepreneurial endeavors later included the import, conversion, and sales of exotic automobiles, first in Minneapolis and later in Los Angeles. His attention then expanded to the creation of the Marquee Motor Yachts brand, which produced power yachts in Taiwan for sale in North America.
While living in California, he met his soulmate, Lois, and together they would build a pioneering residential real estate business that would be a forerunner of today’s house flippers: purchasing, renovating, and selling homes in Bel Aire, Rancho Palos Verdes, Beverly Hills, and Carlsbad, California. During that period they also maintained a series of motor yachts out of Ft Lauderdale, FL venturing as far south as Highborne Cay in the Bahamas and north to Baltimore, MD.
In retirement, Sheldon and Lois relocated to Wexford Plantation in Hilton Head Island, SC where they continued their yachting lifestyle for a number of years. Restless and missing the West Coast, they returned to Los Angles and continued to develop real estate projects. After his beloved Lois succumbed to cancer in 2014, he opted to move east again, this time to Atlanta, GA to be closer to his son, Stan. He settled into Atlanta with ease, making new friends and finding love again with his later-in-life partner, Rosemary Quillin.
He was dynamic, vibrant, and “sharp as a tack” up to the end. Loved and respected by many, Sheldon was a proud father, a doting grandparent and a loving partner. He traveled the world looking for new opportunities and adventures, and was a great appreciator of beautiful objects from sports cars to fine art and theater. Throughout his life, Sheldon followed his dreams and encouraged the people around him to do the same. He will be greatly missed.
In remembrance of Sheldon’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
