She loved her family, friends, and Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church, where for several decades she attended services and volunteered. She also worked as an administrative assistant at Georgia State University and other institutions.
An avid reader, Mary Earle enjoyed keeping up with current events, sports, and the latest in literature and nonfiction. Well into her nineties, she was a member of two book clubs. A supporter of the arts, she enjoyed taking her children and grandchildren to museums, concerts and the theater. An enthusiastic football fan, she relished fall Saturdays, and loyally followed the University of Alabama, her alma mater.
Born May 19, 1924, Mary Earle was the only child of Dobbs and Claudia Scott of Birmingham, Ala. She and her former husband Reed Pelfrey had two children, Claudia Scott Pelfrey Greene, who died in 2007, and Anne Pelfrey Berryman of Athens. Mary Earle is survived by her daughter Anne and son-in-law William C. Berryman, Jr., of Athens; son-in-law Luke Greene, Jr., of Atlanta; granddaughter Mary Reed Greene Durkin and husband John Durkin of Birmingham, Ala.; grandson Will Greene of Ft. Mitchell, Ky.; granddaughter Sarah Swiatowicz and husband Matt Swiatowicz of St. Augustine, Fla.; grandson Charles Berryman of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and great grandsons, Reilly, Dobbs and Haines Durkin of Birmingham, Ala.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 13, at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church. Masks are requested, The family asks that donations in lieu of flowers be sent to Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church, 471 Mt. Vernon Highway, NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
