James M. Johnston (Lt. Col., Retired U. S. Army) age 83 of Dunwoody died August 22, 2015. A native of Atlanta, he grew up in the Kirkwood area and attended Murphy High School. He entered the Army at an early age and retired as a Lt. Col. after 21 years of service. During his military career he served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War in the Corps of Engineers. He earned his education in undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland and received his MBA at Boston University. After retirement, he was employed with the Department of Defense. His hobbies and passions included Georgia Tech Football, tennis, travel and history, especially of WWII. James is survived by his wife, Connie Johnston, his daughters, Lynn Hull and her husband Gary of Raleigh, NC; Susan Monroe and her husband Dave of Chicago; his sons David Johnston and his wife Claudia of Colorado Springs; Stephen Johnston and his wife Lisa of Cumming; his sister Eleanor Thiesen of Alpharetta and 7 grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held Friday, August 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Sandy Springs Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Fisher House Foundation, INC at www.fisherhouse.org\programs. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the service at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt. Vernon Hwy. NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
