George was born on March 21, 1937 in Cincinnati, OH to George and Clara Binder. He was the third of five children with two older sisters and a younger sister and brother. George was raised in Cincinnati, OH and graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1960. Upon graduation, George began a 30 year career with American Can Company where he worked and lived in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St. Louis and finally Atlanta. George was the loving husband to Barb Binder whom he met in high school and was married to for nearly 60 years before her passing in October 2022.
George was an active part of his kids lives getting involved with any and all activities. He loved coaching their baseball and football teams and volunteered as a board member of their youth league park. This carried over to the boys’ high school years where he was a member of the football and baseball booster club boards. When grandkids arrived, “Poppy” found a new center to his universe. He rarely missed a game or activity and often times was the de facto team photographer. His family was always the most important thing to him. George loved sharing updates about his kids and endless stories about his grandkids.
George loved photography and working on projects around his house and yard. He had an engineers’ mindset when it came to planning his projects with meticulous detail given to all he did. His camera went everywhere with him so he could capture the spirit of any event, athletic game or celebration. He grew up a Cincinnati Reds fan but adopted the Braves as his team and watched games almost nightly with his wife. He also forged many wonderful relationships in his neighborhood and was involved with the homeowners’ association.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Clara, his wife Barbara, his sister Barbara and brother Bob. He is survived by his children Tom and Tim (Heather) and grand kids Grant, Regan, Wilson and Harrison; sisters Mildred (Don) and Elaine (Ron) and many wonderful nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 10 at 11 AM at All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody. Following the Mass, the family will host friends and family back at George’s house in Dunwoody.
