Chong Uie Pyen of Duluth, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at the age of 80 in his sleep. He had been fighting cancer in recent months and showed his courage and faith in facing the struggle against fateful pains.
Chong Uie was born in Seoul, Korea in 1942 as the fourth child of Rev. Dr. Fritz Hongkyu Pyen, then the head of the Methodist Seminary and later the Bishop of the Korean Methodist Church. After graduating from the Seoul High School and Seoul National University, Chong Uie served as a field officer of the Republic of Korea Army. Later he came to the United States for graduate studies at the State University of New York and Syracuse University. He then moved to Denver, Colorado where he married Grace and worked in the manufacturing and commerce field while his wife worked for the Federal Government as a Section Chief. When he moved to Dunwoody in the Atlanta region in the 90s, he formed and managed the Grace & Bell Inc. in Tucker for 10 years.
All his life, he was a man of faith and servant of God supporting the Christian community in and out of the Methodist Church. He worked for 16 years at the Center for Pan Asian Community Services, Inc. as a Citizenship Class Instructor and Property Manager for Rainbow Heights Elderly Apartment, and he offered helping hands in numerous projects and events. As an avid soccer player in his youth, he developed a keen sense of sportsmanship and displayed fairness and justice.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Grace S. Lee Pyen, former Director of United Methodist Women and former President of Network National of Korean-American United Methodist Women, and two sons, Joseph and Daniel, along with the daughter-in-law Yeo-Jin, and grandson Conrad.
A visitation for Chong will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt Vernon Highway, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
A funeral service will occur Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 1:00 PM, interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Gardens 201 Mount Vernon Highway, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
