A man who had a smile for everyone and a mission in life to bring joy and happiness to the lives of others; Andy Pervis Maness or “Pop” was truly one of God’s lights in this world. He lived his life with purpose, honesty, love and integrity. Born on November 22, 1941 in Tuscaloosa Alabama; Andy bid goodbye to us on Sunday morning, August 14, 2022 at North Fulton Hospital, Roswell, GA completing a wonderful 80 years of life.
A graduate of the University of Alabama, and a Veteran of the United States Navy; Andy was a devoted fan of the Crimson Tide. He met the love of his life, Kathryn Spencer Carruthers Maness while at the University and they spent the early years of their marriage traveling the globe and sharing in adventures from South East Asia to the Galapagos, Switzerland and many other destinations. Kathryn was his first and only love and her passing in 2000 after a hard-fought battle with Breast Cancer was a hard blow that Andy handled with grace, strength and resiliency. His family finds comfort in knowing they are now reunited in heaven.
His children and his grandson, Caleb were the light of his life. He was a devoted “GPOP” or “GHOP” to his beloved Grandson Caleb. He spent countless hours with him: snuggling, dancing, singing and play cooking at a small wood kitchen set he cleaned up just for him. Andy delighted in being a grandfather, and as a nod to his many years as a Civil Engineer for The Coca-Cola Company, Andy could not wait to have a little one call him POP.
While working for The Coca Cola Company, Andy had the opportunity to further explore the world as his job took him throughout Central and South America and afforded him the opportunity to live in Coral Gables Florida, Cincinnati, Ohio and then to Atlanta in 1976. Following an early retirement after 35 years, Andy became the self-appointed Manager of Maness Manor, converting his home to the ultimate playground for his then small grandson.
No one that met Andy was not touched by his boundless spirit of love and generosity. He served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and greeter at Peachtree Presbyterian Church where he was a member for 45 years. In his later years he was known as a greeter in his neighborhood where he would spend hours sitting on the driveway of Maness Manor with a smile for all who walked by. He extended that same spirit and gregarious nature to the residents of Historic Roswell Place where he spent his final months. He made an immediate impact on everyone he met there and is sorely missed. That love was not reserved just for humans though; Andy had a soft spot for all animals including his late cherished cat “Little Guy” and the rescue dogs he took in and fondly named “Rocky”, “Blackie”, “Newfy” and “Peyton”. He enjoyed watching wildlife and feeding crackers by hand to a squirrel he befriended.
Andy grew up with a love of golf and could often be seen wearing his straw Coca Cola hat and lining up golf shots with his corn cob pipe. He loved nothing more than sharing that love with his son and grandson.
Andy was preceded in death by his beloved wife Kathryn Spencer Carruthers Maness, parents Alsie Evertt and Bobbye Jones Maness and brother Jackie Maness. He is survived by his children: His son, Andrew Penn Maness and wife Mallory Tucker Maness of Atlanta, GA, daughter Emily Maness Johnson and partner Kevin Musser of Atlanta, GA and her son with William Louis Johnson IV, Caleb Louis Johnson, Brothers: Robert and Danny Maness. And many nieces and nephews along with family pets that will miss his head scratches and special treats.
A celebration of Andy’s life will be held at H.M Patterson Funeral Home in Sandy Springs, GA on August 26th at 5pm. Prior to the service, the family invite friends to gather at 4pm.
