Robert William Eggert

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary (Giguere) Eggert of Sandwich, MA; his four children: James Eggert and wife Jane of Fountain Hills, AZ; Donna Bridges of Sandwich, MA and fiancé Robert Aldrich of Mashpee, MA; Janice Souza of Sandwich, MA and William Eggert and wife Teresa of Dawsonville, GA.

He was blessed with eleven grandchildren: Robert Aldrich, Jr., of Sandwich, MA; Kathryn Hamner of Dallas, Texas, Sherri McGraw of East Greenwich, RI, Justin Aldrich of Sandwich, MA, Laura Eggert, Caroline Novak and Elizabeth Eggert all of Fountain Hills, AZ; Matthew Bridges of Sandwich, MA , James Souza of Boston, MA; Blake Seevers of Bourne, MA; and J.T. Eggert of Dawsonville, GA. He is also survived by nine loving great grandchildren.

He was born in Charlotte, NY to Olga (Martin) Eggert and William Eggert; he had one sister Elizabeth (Betty) O’Rourke of East Pointe, MI who preceded him in death.

Robert (Bob) was a proud WWII veteran from the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS Benson DD 421 and USS Massey DD 778 from 1942 – 1949 in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatre and had the privilege of being present in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the peace treaty – V.J. Day. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and a member of the American Legion Post 188 in Sandwich, MA.

Robert and his wife, Mary raised their children in Abington, MA and later in Brockton, MA. He was employed by the Bay State Gas Company for 30 years, retiring in 1991. He moved to Sandwich, MA in 1989 to enjoy the simple pleasures of life; his family was always first and foremost. He was an avid Red Sox fan, loved his evening popcorn and ice cream. His grandchildren were captivated by his stories of the “olden days” and stories from when he served our country. He was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Church. He was a proud, hardworking, respected, compassionate man who often reminded his family “home is where you hang your hat” and “it does you no good to be the richest man in the cemetery”. His words were to “live today “and he did it so well for 90 years. He will be sadly missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Robert Eggert’s name to the American Legion, Post 188, 20 Main Street, Sandwich, MA or a charity of your choice.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service, Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home 154 Route 6A Sandwich, MA. Visitation prior to service 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment with military honors will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
