caregiver for the last 8 years, died Tuesday November 3, 2015 at J.M.L. Care Center in Falmouth, after
a period of declining health.
She is the daughter of the late Kilgore and Jesse Irene Olive.
Joan is survived by her four children; Sandy Kinsman (Steve) of Heath, Ma., David Nolan (Linda
Randall) of Buzzards Bay, Paul Nolan (Angela) of Sagamore Beach, and Marsha Ferrick ( Myles )of
Forestdale, MA. She is also survived five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, with one on the
way in February.
Joan graduated from Weymouth High School in 1944 and continued her education at the Kathleen Del
School in Brookline, MA until she graduated in 1946, having earned her Associated degree. This was
the same year that she married her husband of sixty years, the late Francis Eugene Nolan, Jr.
She and Frank owned a convenience store called Country Corner Store in Pembroke, MA for many
years. During this time, she sang in and directed the Junior Choir at Bryantville Methodist Church. As a
member she oversaw the Youth Group Super Attendants of the Protestant Church in Pembroke. She
became a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, of which she was a member for the past
fifty-nine years. Belonging to the Sandwich Chapter #221 OES. She was worthy Matron of the
Wampatuck Chapter O.E.S. as well. Joan enjoyed attending BUMC and singing in the choir.
After selling the family store, Joan worked for Capeway Cleaners for eighteen years. She then worked
at the Heritage Museums of the Gardens, formerly known as Heritage Plantation in Sandwich for
seven years until she retired in 2004. While retired she enjoyed doing community service, especially
baking for special friends and her primary care physicians.
There will be calling hours at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Rte. 6A, in Sandwich on Friday,
November 13, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, November 14, at 11:00 AM, at the Bourne United Methodist
Church in Bourne. A private burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
All who knew Joan will remember her love of music of all kinds and her beautiful soprano voice. She
had a loving, generous spirit and will be missed by all. She felt her biggest pride and joy were her
family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in Joan’s name to either the Bourne United
Methodist Church, P.O. Box 3037, Bourne, MA 02532, or the MSPCA of Cape Cod, 1577 Falmouth
Road, Centerville, MA 02632.
