John Russell O’Brien, was born on September 28th, 1926 and raised in San Francisco by his parents, James and Anna O’Brien. He passed away peacefully in his San Rafael home on August 2nd, 2018. He was happily married to Joan Mary Hansen for 68 years, raising four children together.
Russ had a very successful 60-year career as a Drafting Specialist in the Bay Area. He started with Bethlehem Steel at 19 years old and continued working for various drafting and engineering firms, until retiring with PG&E after 25 years.
He had a passion for traveling all over the world with his wife Joan, and especially loved their times in Hawaii, Europe and on many cruises. Outside of work and travel, Russ designed and tended to his beloved garden, with over 30 roses planted for his wife. He was a true fan of watching baseball, both the A’s and Giants.
Russ was a man of very few words, but in the last few months he expressed his immense love and gratitude for his family. Always looking out for them, especially his wife, who often called him “Mr. Fix-it.” He loved bestowing life experience and wisdom to his children, teaching them independence, organization and how to have a green thumb!
He is survived by his wife Joan O’Brien, daughters Laurie Walker (Tony), Leslie O’Brien (Terry) and Maureen Casassa, as well as their son, Daniel O’Brien (Vicki). Granddaughters Ali and Jaime Casassa, Tara O’Brien and Grandson Derrick O’Brien and many nieces and nephews.
Big thank you to Dr. Metzer and Dr. McCallister for all their wonderful care. Thank you to Hospice by the Bay and Gentle Care for supporting him and our family.
A mass will be held at the Mission San Rafael Arcangel on Wednesday, August, 22nd at 11am.
