Walter was born on July 21st, 1963 to Pat and Nancy Finnerty, Pearse Rd., Sligo, Ireland. Walter was the youngest of a family of 9, predeceased by his sister Elizabeth, brother Sean and his parents, Pat and Nancy. He is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn Finnerty and children Kate, Pearse, Neil and Grace, his siblings Mary, Ann, Catherine, Bernie, Paddy and Tony, his sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends in all corners of the world.
Walter attended Summerhill school in Sligo and Bolton Street Technical College in Dublin. Walter emigrated to California in 1986 with his wife Evelyn Curley, Galway. They started their California journey in South San Francisco and then moved down the peninsula as Walter loved the California sunshine. Walter proceeded to get his general contractors license and worked mainly in the Mountain View and Los Altos area. He has many clients/friends from the area for the last 30 years.
Walters proudest achievement in life was his family. He loved being a father and husband. He was at every soccer game and school event, loved backyard barbecues, and camping in Yosemite. Walter was a great conversationalist and he was quick to make you laugh. He was a big personality and there isn’t a single person in his life who doesn’t have a funny story about him. Throughout his illness, he remained very positive, constantly making jokes and making everyone around him laugh. Walter lived his life to the fullest, making the most of every moment with his many interests, gardening, his great collection of pins, license plates, coins and trinkets.
Walter was the proudest Irish man you could ever meet and a great supporter of Sinn Fein and NORAID. He was a proud member of the Pearse and Connolly Fife & Drum band. Walter’s contribution to the Band cannot be overstated. His loyalty over the past decades has been unmatched and, even while sick these last few months.
